Frequently asked questions

Welcome to the HIGS FAQ section! Here, you'll find answers to common questions that homeowners often have about hiring licensed construction companies, our membership benefits, home maintenance, and more. Whether you're looking for information on legal aspects, material costs, or how we can help keep your home in top condition, we’ve got you covered

While hiring a handyman might seem more affordable, there are important legal and financial risks to consider:

  • Legal Limitations: Handymen can only perform work where the total cost of labor and materials is under $500. If the project exceeds this amount, it becomes a legal violation (a misdemeanor).
  • Lack of Insurance: Most handymen do not carry liability insurance to cover damages such as water or fire, or workers' compensation insurance for injuries. If an accident occurs, homeowners could be held liable for injuries or property damage—even if it was the handyman’s fault.
  • Protection and Savings: Licensed construction companies typically carry both liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. This protects homeowners from unexpected costs and risks, ensuring peace of mind. In the long run, hiring a licensed professional can save you money by preventing costly issues down the line.

Hiring a licensed construction company for small jobs ensures the work is done safely, legally, and with full protection for your home and finances.

By offering Higs as an annual membership, we provide you with a dedicated, vetted technician who knows you and your home inside and out. This guarantees consistent, reliable, and high-quality service every time.

Our membership fosters a long-term partnership, enabling us to understand your home deeply and deliver proactive, ongoing care. Our mission is to give homeowners peace of mind by maintaining a safe, functional, and joyful home in top condition year-round.

HIGS provides basic materials, such as caulking and nails, at no additional cost. However, homeowners are responsible for finished materials like kitchen faucets, toilets, grout, and similar items.

We charge a flat sourcing fee of $15 per visit for finished materials, rather than a percentage of the material costs.

We recommend homeowners select the finished materials themselves, and your dedicated home manager will handle the purchase for you, ensuring a seamless process.
